Aquascape Stones
Stone is the part of a scape you commit to. Plants can be replaced and substrate can be capped, but once the rock is set and the soil is packed around it, you live with the layout — and with whatever that stone does to your water. We stock aquascaping stone at both San Diego stores and hand-pick pieces for our own display tanks, so the notes below come from putting these rocks in water rather than from a catalog.
The one thing to know before you buy: carbonate or inert
Aquascaping stone splits into two groups, and the split matters more than the color.
Carbonate stone slowly dissolves. Seiryu-type stone is the classic example — the white veining running through it is calcium carbonate. In the tank it raises carbonate hardness (KH) and nudges pH upward, continuously, for as long as it sits there.
Inert stone does not. Lava rock, petrified wood, jasper and quartzite are silica-based and leave your parameters where they were.
You can test any rock yourself in ten seconds: put a drop of white vinegar on a dry surface. Steady fizzing means carbonate. No reaction means inert. Do this with landscaping stone or anything you collected — it is the single test that saves tanks.
Which one your tank wants
Carbonate stone is genuinely fine, and often helpful, for most community fish, livebearers, African cichlids, and Neocaridina shrimp (cherries, blues, yellows), all of which prefer some buffering. A stable pH of 7.6 is better than an unstable 6.8.
Go inert if you keep Caridina shrimp — crystal reds, Taiwan bees, tiger shrimp — which want soft, acidic water and will not breed reliably against a buffering rock. Same for wild bettas, chocolate gouramis, licorice gouramis, discus, and most soft-water breeding projects. Inert stone is also the right call in any tank running an active soil, since the soil is working to pull pH down while the rock works to push it up, and the soil loses.
How much effect you actually get
Volume decides it. A single fist-sized piece of carbonate stone in a 75-gallon tank on weekly water changes barely registers. A full hardscape in a 5-gallon nano will hold that tank two full points of KH above your tap. If you want the look of Seiryu in a soft-water nano, use less of it, or use an inert stone with similar grey-and-white character and accept that no substitute is exact.
Picking pieces that work together
Buy stone from the same batch. Rock from one lot shares grain, weathering and color; pieces bought months apart rarely sit convincingly in the same layout. Pick one clearly dominant stone and build supporting pieces around it — equal-sized rocks read as a pile rather than a landscape. Keep the strata running the same direction across every piece, tilted slightly rather than dead level, so the eye reads it as one formation. Odd numbers help. Three good rocks beat seven mediocre ones.
Weigh more than you think you need. Stone loses a surprising amount of visual mass once it is half-buried in substrate, and running back for a second piece means a second batch.

Prices run from a few dollars for small accent pieces up to centerpiece stones. If a piece is listed as out of stock, ask — stone moves between the two stores and what is not online is often on the floor at Convoy.
Bring your water numbers
Both stores test water for free, and stone choice is one of the few decisions where knowing your tap KH first genuinely changes the answer. San Diego tap is already hard, which is why carbonate stone is less of a problem here than it is for aquarists in soft-water cities — and why anyone chasing Caridina here is usually running RO regardless.
