Black Arowana - Osteoglossum ferreirai

Rare. Regal. Mysterious. The Black Arowana is a breathtaking freshwater predator with a prehistoric lineage and unmatched grace. Native to the blackwater rivers of South America, this majestic fish is a prized species among experienced aquarists for its jet-black body, subtle iridescent sheen, and dragon-like movement.

As juveniles, they flaunt vibrant black with silver accents and red-orange fins—colors that evolve into a sleek, dark charcoal body as they mature. Often called the “Shadow Dragon,” the Black Arowana symbolizes strength, protection, and prestige in many cultures.

Key Features:

  • ? Rare and exotic—less common than the Silver or Asian Arowana

  • ? Long, sleek body and elegant swimming style reminiscent of a dragon

  • ? Juveniles boast stunning black and red coloration

  • ? Best suited for large, minimalist aquariums or display tanks

  • ? Surface feeder with keen eyesight and lightning reflexes

Care Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 180–250 gallons (larger for adults)

  • Water Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • pH Range: 6.0 – 7.0 (soft, slightly acidic water preferred)

  • Diet: Carnivorous – frozen fish, shrimp, crickets, mealworms, and high-protein pellets

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; best kept alone or with robust, non-aggressive tankmates

  • Lifespan: 15 – 20+ years with expert care

Important Notes:

  • ? Black Arowanas are powerful jumpers! A tightly sealed, heavy tank lid is essential.

  • ? Excellent water quality and a strong filtration system are crucial due to their sensitivity to poor conditions.

  • ? Not recommended for beginner aquarists due to size and care demands.

Black Arowanas (also known as Blue Arowana) are one of the coolest aro's you can find in the tropical fish hobby! These guys are quite rare and hard to find now a days! They are the closest thing you can get to an "exotic arowana" as Asian Arowanas are illegal here in the US. These guys only come in so often per year so be sure to reserve yours today!

Size is around 5" or so.
