| Flowerhorns are an ornamental cichlid popular for their bright colors and trademark lump on their head.
We got a new batch of really gorgeous flowerhorns so we'll give you some pointers on taking care of them! |
In the new batch we got ZZ/Red Dragons and ZZ/Kamfa mixed. We also got some adorable panda parrots- while not flowerhorns, they are a cichlid hybrid and benefit from similar care! |
| Now what does ZZ mean? ZZ means Zhen zhou which means pearl in Chinese and refers to the silvery white dots on the body of the flowerhorn. ZZ flowerhorns are also known as super red dragon, pearl dragon, and thai silk flowerhorns.
ZZ/kamfa mixes are a crossbreed between the zhen zhou flowerhorn and kamfa flowerhorn. Kamfa flowerhorns have white eyes and a more square-like body |
| Flowerhorns are the result of intense breeding between select species of Central American cichlids and thus are not a 'man-made' species. The lump that you see is not their brains as many assume when they first see this fish. It's essentially a lump of muscle and fat! Due to the hybrid nature of these fish, we cannot guarantee that the fry you get will have the genetics favoring a lump.
They are a HIGHLY aggressive fish. They'll eat anything they can swallow and will aggress other flowerhorns out of its territory. |
| Flowerhorns require higher temperatures, 82-85 degrees Fahrenheit and appreciate a bit of salt in their water to clean out any germs that may be around. We recommend a minimum of 50 gallons for one flowerhorn.
"Grooming" your fish is going to bring out the colors a lot. Grooming in this context is ensuring the best environmental conditions and stimulation for your fish! This is going to include water changes twice a week. |
