Freshwater Eels & Eel-Like Fish For Aquariums

Eels & eel-like fish species are amongst one of the top choices for oddball fish keepers!

Eels and eel-looking fish are popular not only because of their appearance but they have interesting personalities and add an extra touch and element to compatible fish tanks. Not only can these fish be tamed to be hand-fed but they add energy and exude behavior that is fascinating!
Though not true eels such as those found in brackish or saltwater environments, these freshwater eels and eel-like counterparts resemble what most of us hobbyists would label as an "eel." We've included a few of our top favorites among the Pet Zone SD team and our customers.

FIRE EEL - (MASTACEMBELUS ERYTHROTAENIA)

By far the best selling eel in our store, both online and in-store! They have fascinating behavior and striking colors and appearance!
Tire Track Eel (Mastacembelus armatus)

These tire track eels are fun to watch while they swim around the tank and make a great addition to your fish tanks!
They have cool movements and add a bit of exotic-ness to any freshwater tank.

Half-Banded Spiny Eel (Macrognathus circumcinctus)

These eels are fun to watch while they swim around the tank and make a great addition to your fish tanks!
They are the smallest species of the spiny eel family and max out at around 8".

Java Loach 'Black Kuhli Loach' - Pangio oblonga

The Black Kuhli Loach is one of the smaller sized loaches and only reaches a max size of around 4 inches.
Their eel-like appearance makes them very eyecatching. They tend to be timid and hide but after time, they'll start warming up and coming out during the day.

Kuhli Loach - Panglo SEMICINCTA kuhlii

The Kuhli Loach is one of the smaller sized loaches and only reaches a max size of around 4 inches.
Their eel-like appearance makes them very eye-catching. They tend to be timid and hide but after time, they'll start warming up and coming out during the day.

Dojo Loach - Misgurnus anguillicaudatus

The Dojo Loach is also known as the "Weather Loach" for their ability to predict the weather with their barometric pressure detection.

They make great additions to community fish tanks as they are very peaceful. They tolerate temperatures between 50-82 degrees, making them good tankmates for both tropical fish and coldwater fish such as goldfish.

Bichirs

Though not an eel, they have a similar appearance to one and are one of our most popular oddball fish!

Bichirs are one of the last surviving descendants of fish that existed during the Jurassic period, making them a true living fossil

'Freshwater' Snowflake Moray Eel (Gymnothorax tile)

Though commonly known and listed as a "freshwater' eel, they need to be kept in brackish water.
