Hardscape 101: Aquascaping Rocks

Posted by Emily N. on on 15th Sep 2021

Hardscape is the general term we use for the rocks and wood that fill out aquascapes. Today we'll go over some of the rocks we have in stock!
Seiryu and Black Mountain Seiryu stone

Seiryu and black mountain seiryu stones are commonly used in iwagumi style tanks. Seiryu is a light grey color and black mountain seiryu is its darker cousin with stripes of white. Both feature dips and crevices which add a ton of texture to any aquascape!

These rocks are not inert and will slightly affect water parameters such as pH.

Dragon stone
Dragon stone, or ohko stone, is an orange-y brown rock popularized by Takashi Amano when he brought the Iwagumi style into the aquascaping hobby. This rock is relatively easy to break into smaller pieces and adds a ton of texture to any aquascape!

Dragon stone is inert which means it won't affect your water parameters, though we do recommend rinsing before using as it gets dusty in the shop!
Burmese Petrified Wood Stones

Petrified wood is actually fossilized trees! Over millions of years, the living material of trees and other plants break down and are replaced by stone through a mineralization process. The result is this gorgeous red material with details reminiscent of wood grain.

These stones MUST be rinsed before using. This rock is usually inert.

El Jefe Stone

El Jefe stone is a stone dear to our hearts as it's hand collected by our friend, aquascaping legend Tom Barr! This rock has fantastic texture and color, ranging from grey-blue to red-brown. El Jefe stone is also relatively easy to break apart but keep in mind that it tends to break off into thinner sheets compared to dragon stone.

Wolf Stone

Our last stone for today is going to be wolf stone. Wolf stone is probably our most textured rock on the shop! It looks almost as if grey rocks of a variety of sizes got imbedded into concrete. Due to the extreme texture, we would be careful using this stone on a tank meant for bettas or other fish with delicate fins or tails.
