Freshwater Puffers In The Aquarium Hobby

Puffers Are Considered The Aquatic Puppies.

Let’s face it, Pufferfish are known to be notoriously aggressive (which they definitely can be) but when time and dedication is given, they make very fulfilling pets with their high level of curiosity and interaction with its owner.

For those who believe all puffers are either from saltwater or brackish water, there are quite a handful of 100% freshwater species.

From the commonly seen and petite Malabar Dwarf Puffer (popularly known as the Pea Puffer or Pygmy Puffer) that can be kept in smaller aquariums to larger monsters such as the Mbu or Fahaka, there’s a puffer that’ll fit many hobbyists’ preferences. Even a "Friendly Puffer" (Amazon Pufferfish) exists and is commonly kept in a planted tank with community fish.

Amazon Pufferfish

The Amazon Puffer, which many know as "The Friendly Puffer" or Bee Puffer, is another true freshwater puffer and can actually thrive in a community tank, especially one that is planted.

They're seasonal and go fast so do not hesitate to get your hands on one when they become available.

Malabar Dwarf Puffer - Carinotetraodon travancoricus

Ths is one of the smallest of the pufferfish family and are more ideal as they can live in full freshwater in comparison to others that require brackish water condition.

They are a bit more shy compared to other larger puffers due to their smaller size as they are prey in the wild to other larger fish. Also known as the Pea Pufferfish due to their super small size
