Caridina Shrimp - Shrimp Keeping Tips

Caridina Shrimp are some of the most beautiful and vibrant colored freshwater shrimp available. There are currently around 300 species described from tropical and subtropical areas. Caridina Shrimp are considered a moderate to advanced keepers pet and can be sensitive. There are a few important tips to be aware of to ensure success and healthy shrimp, let’s go over a few!
One of the first important tips is to ensure the tank is cycled and prepared properly. Caridina Shrimp appreciate acidic, soft water. While most tap is high in pH and contains many minerals making the water hard it will need buffering. A good active buffer substrate is crucial for parameters. Controsoil and Amazonia are two examples of good buffer substrates that will assist in creating the proper parameters. RO water is a better option to help with creating parameters that are more acidic and softer opposed to tap. After you have set up the tank with the appropriate substrate and other additions such as cholla logs and almond leaves (for buffer) the tank will need some time to cycle. Making sure the tank is properly cycled is crucial to the health of the shrimp and time should be taken during this step. Around a month or two with the tank running and weekly water changes will be good. Make sure to test the tank before adding any shrimp and if parameters are off allow more time for cycling.
Once your tank is balanced and ready remember to drip acclimate the shrimp, as just putting them in the tank will shock the shrimp and you will likely lose them. Plants are needed for hiding places, comfort and biofilm. Biofilm is an important food source for the shrimp. In addition to biofilm quality pellets or wafer are a great additional food source. Caridina are particularly sensitive to fluctuations in parameters so be sure you are checking your tanks regularly.
