Marbled Goby

Goby are fish with an interesting appearance that are widespread in many habitats around the world. Mostly know as saltwater fish, there are actually quite a few freshwater species available. Typically small in size there is one freshwater Goby that is a large territorial carnivore compared to the smaller varieties that mostly feed on biofilm. That Goby is the Marbled Goby and originates from Southeast Asia.

Widely distributed the Marbled Goby can be found in freshwater and brackish water throughout China, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, as well as Indonesia. One of the largest Goby fish in the world they generally grow to 12” in aquariums with the largest wild specimen measuring to 26”! A good sized tank is around 100-150 gallons. As a fish who spends most of their time at the bottom levels of a tank they require a sandy substrate of several inches and can be observed burying themselves camouflaging for prey. They are territorial fish and will appreciate driftwood or rocks to help feel comfortable. Plastic pipes are also a good option for hiding places and they can be found inside the piping when given the chance to use. A somewhat nocturnal fish that appreciates dimmer lighting options. The Marbled Goby have a large mouth and are territorial to their own kind, for this reason they are best kept solitary or with larger fish that can hold their own and occupy mid to top levels of the tank. As a strictly carnivorous fish they will readily accept smaller fish, frozen foods and night crawlers. A varied diet will be appreciated and will bring out the variation of colors the fish can display. The Marbled Goby is a beautifully patterned fish with colors varying from grey, brown, or red with a black pattern complimenting the lower half of the body.

The Marbled Goby is also considered a delicacy across Asia. In the Chinese culture they are appreciated for the delicate tasty texture of the meat as well as healing properties. The Chinese believe the Marbled Goby has healing properties when consumed, especially after a surgery or giving birth. They are commercially raised and farmed in China as well. In Malaysia they are considered good luck but are not as common as typically they are wild caught and fetch a higher price. In Thailand the Marble Goby is know in folktales and is the main subject of television shows and movies. With such an interesting history and unique appearance the Marbled Goby is a fantastic pet fish for those with the space and the understanding of their care. We are happy to provide these fish nation wide.
