The Roseline Shark (Denison Barb), scientifically known as Sahyadria
denisonii, is a striking and active freshwater fish that has gained
popularity among aquarium enthusiasts. Native to the Western Ghats
region of India, this species belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is
renowned for its vibrant colors, distinctive appearance, and dynamic
behavior.
One of the defining features of the Roseline Shark is its elongated and
streamlined body, marked by a horizontal stripe that runs along its
lateral line. This stripe is vivid red or orange, contrasting against
the silver or gold background color of the rest of the body. The caudal
fin is forked, and the overall appearance is sleek and visually
appealing. Adult Roseline Sharks typically reach lengths of 4 to 6
inches (10 to 15 centimeters).
Creating a suitable environment is crucial for the well-being of
Roseline Sharks. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with ample
swimming space. A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a small
group of these active fish. The addition of driftwood, rocks, and other
decorations can provide hiding spots and mimic the riverine habitats
they inhabit in the wild.
Maintaining stable water conditions is essential for the health of
Roseline Sharks. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH
range of 6.5 to 7.5. The water temperature should be kept between 72 and
79 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 26 degrees Celsius). Regular water changes
help ensure optimal water quality.
Roseline Sharks are omnivores with a preference for both plant matter
and protein-rich foods. Their diet should include high-quality flakes,
pellets, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and
daphnia. A varied diet contributes to their overall health and enhances
their vibrant coloration.
These sharks are known for their active and schooling behavior. They
thrive when kept in groups of at least six individuals, and their
schooling dynamics add to the visual appeal of the aquarium. While they
are generally peaceful, care should be taken when selecting tank mates.
Avoid housing them with aggressive or territorial species, and choose
fish of similar size and temperament.
Breeding Roseline Sharks in captivity can be challenging due to their
specific requirements. In their natural habitat, these fish migrate to
spawn during the monsoon season. Successfully breeding them in an
aquarium often involves simulating these seasonal changes through
adjustments in water parameters, such as temperature and water flow.
Roseline Shark is a captivating and dynamic addition to freshwater
aquariums, admired for its vibrant colors and active behavior. With
proper care, a well-designed environment, and attention to their social
needs, these sharks can thrive and become a focal point in community
tanks.
