The Blue Mahseer is a rare and impressive large-growing freshwater fish known for its powerful, streamlined body, big reflective scales, and beautiful blue-toned sheen that becomes more noticeable as it matures. Also sold under names like Blue Mahseer Barb, Stracheyi Mahseer, Blue Tor, Waterfall Carp, and Pla Puang, this species is a standout choice for advanced hobbyists keeping large aquariums, monster fish communities, or indoor pond-style setups.

Scientifically known as Neolissochilus stracheyi, this Southeast Asian cyprinid is related to barbs, carps, and other river-dwelling mahseer species. It is an active swimmer that appreciates clean, highly oxygenated water, steady flow, and plenty of open swimming space. Juveniles may look more silver or gold at first, but mature specimens can develop a stunning metallic glow with blue undertones along the body and fins.

Blue Mahseer are generally peaceful for their size but should only be kept with other fast-moving, similarly sized tankmates. Avoid housing them with tiny fish that may be seen as food or slow, delicate fish that may be outcompeted during feeding. Great potential tankmates include larger barbs, silver dollars, datnoids, bichirs, larger peaceful cichlids, arowanas, and other robust community or monster fish species.

This is not a nano or beginner fish. The Blue Mahseer is best for experienced aquarists who can provide a large aquarium, excellent filtration, strong aeration, and consistent maintenance.
