Flagtail Prochilodus - Semaprochilodus insignis

The Flagtail Prochilodus is a large, active freshwater fish admired for its bold appearance and lively behavior. Native to the rivers and tributaries of South America, this species is instantly recognizable by its silver body, horizontal dark stripes, and striking tail fin adorned with vivid red and black bands—hence the name "Flagtail."

Flagtail Prochilodus are energetic swimmers and do best in spacious aquariums with strong filtration and plenty of open swimming space. They are schooling fish in the wild, so they feel most comfortable when kept in small groups. Their constant grazing behavior helps control algae, though they should be supplemented with a varied diet of algae wafers, fresh vegetables, and quality prepared foods.

While generally peaceful, their large size and active nature mean they are best housed with similarly sized tankmates. A secure lid is recommended, as these fish are known to be powerful jumpers.
