Flowerhorn Diet - What To Feed Your Flowerhorn Cichlids?
Posted by Pet Zone Customer Service Team on on 10th Feb 2014
People often ask us what is the best food to feed their Flowerhorns. Or what is the best fish food or pellet to increase their KOK size or pearls and colors? This is a bit subjective as many Flowerhorn owners will claim that one food is superior over another.
The best thing to do is giving your Flowerhorn a variety of different food staples. A diverse diet is key in not only the beauty and appearance of your fish but for it's health as well. The following are popular ingredients that a number of fish food manufacturers add to the ingredients of fish food pellets: Astaxanthin, Spirulina, Xanthophyll. While these ingredients are known to enhance the color and kok size of Flowerhorns, it is always good to keep a balance and to not feed too much of one thing to the fish, as is the case just about any other fish or pet.
We personally feed a whole variety of fish foods to our Flowerhorns here at the store. Grand Sumo, ChingMix, ALife, Hai Feng Fast Color and Monster Kok (along with dried shrimp) are some of the foods we give to our Flowerhorns. We mix it up quite well and this helps prevent the fish from getting "too used" to a certain fish food brand that they "plateau" and no longer receive the enhancing benefits. Change it up each day (or every other day) and this way, your fish won't become too spoiled on one thing and can be more hardy and acceptable to other foods.
Another enhancer that your Flowerhorns can benefits from is Thai Mineral (also known as High Active Mineral), which you add to your fish tank during water changes (or when moving a fish to a different tank, etc.) This helps the Flowerhorn (can be used on other tropical fish as well) in a variety of different ways, such as boosting its immunity, regenerate scale or fin damage, etc, etc.
Power Pink (and the enhanced version of Power Pink Plus) is another great supplement that you mix with any fish food. This also helps with a variety of different things, along with the color, kok and overall beauty of your fish.
We cannot say which one is the "absolute best" because as mentioned before, it's subjective and each fish is reacts differently to their diet and tank conditions. It's all based on your own experiences and each Flowerhorn is different. Feeding 2-3 times a day is optimal. Do note that the Flowerhorn is a bit of a messy eater, so be sure to use strong filtration and clean the tank at least 1-2 times a week.
