Substrate is the decision that is hardest to undo. Everything else in a planted tank can be changed without tearing it down; the substrate cannot. It also does more work than people expect — it feeds root-feeding plants, it can hold your pH a full point below your tap water, and it determines whether carpeting plants take hold or float away. Here is how to choose.
Active aquasoil — ADA Amazonia, Tropica, Controsoil, SL Aqua and the rest — is baked nutrient-rich soil in granule form. It does three things at once: it carries nutrients that roots draw on for a year or more, it has high cation exchange capacity so it buffers dosed fertilizer rather than letting it wash out, and it actively pulls pH and carbonate hardness down toward the low 6s. That last property is why nearly every serious planted tank and every Caridina shrimp tank runs it.
Inert substrate — sand, gravel, controsand — does none of that. It holds plants in place and nothing more. That is not a criticism: if you keep livebearers, African cichlids or anything that wants harder water, active soil is working against you, and inert sand plus root tabs plus water-column dosing is the correct setup.
Fresh active soil leaches ammonia. ADA Amazonia is the most notorious for it, but most soils do it to some degree for the first two to four weeks. This is why you cycle a soil tank before livestock go in, and why plants can go in immediately but shrimp absolutely cannot. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it: plant heavily on day one, run the filter, do large water changes for the first fortnight, and test until ammonia reads zero. Rushing this step is the single most common way a first planted tank fails.
Powder grades exist for a reason. Fine granules give small-rooted carpeting plants — dwarf hairgrass, monte carlo, HC cuba — something to actually grip, and they look right at nano scale. Normal grade suits stem plants, swords, crypts and anything in a standard-sized tank. A common approach is normal grade for the bulk of the bed with a powder layer capping the front third where the carpet goes.
Two inches at the front, three to four at the back. The slope is partly visual — it exaggerates depth in a way a flat bed does not — and partly practical, since root-heavy plants go at the back. If you need more height than you want to pay for in soil, build the rear up with lava rock or a base material underneath and cap it. That is also what power-sand style base layers are for: porosity and organics underneath the soil, at lower cost and lower weight than soil all the way down.
Active soil is a consumable. Nutrients deplete over roughly a year, and the granules themselves break down and compact over two to three, at which point buffering capacity is gone and root growth suffers. You do not have to replace it on a schedule — plenty of tanks run five years on dosing alone — but know that a soil tank at year four is nutritionally an inert tank, and dose accordingly.
Root tabs, base fertilizers and mineral additives fill the gap for inert setups and for aging soil. If your swords and crypts are yellowing from the older leaves inward while stem plants at the top look fine, that is a root-zone problem, and tabs are the fix rather than more liquid fertilizer.
Substrate choice depends on your water and your livestock, and San Diego tap is hard enough that the answer here often differs from what you read on a forum written somewhere with soft water.
