Substrate Additives
Substrate additives work underneath the soil, where you cannot see them and cannot easily change your mind. That makes them one of the few purchases in this hobby worth thinking about before the tank is wet — and also one where a tank that is already running can still be rescued with root tabs.
Base layers, added at setup
Products in the power-sand and jungle-base family go down before the soil. They do two jobs: they add porosity, which keeps the lower substrate from going anaerobic and compacting, and they add slow-release organics and minerals that roots reach into over the first year or two.
They also let you build height cheaply. Soil is expensive and heavy; a base layer underneath means less of it to reach the same depth, which matters on a sloped scape where the back may be four inches deep.
Keep the base layer away from the front glass. Buried organics visible through the pane look untidy, and a base layer that reaches the front is more likely to be disturbed during maintenance.
Root tabs, added any time
The fix for an established tank. Heavy root feeders — amazon swords, cryptocoryne, vallisneria, aponogeton bulbs — draw most of their nutrition from the substrate, and they will slowly decline in inert sand or in aquasoil that has been running for a couple of years. Push a tab into the substrate near the root mass every month or two.
How to tell you need them: deficiency showing on the older, lower leaves of rooted plants while the stem plants at the top of the tank look fine. Yellowing that starts at the outside of an older sword leaf and works inward is the classic picture. If instead the new growth is pale or stunted, that is a water-column problem and more liquid fertilizer is the answer, not tabs.
Mineral and bacterial additives
Bacterial supplements applied at setup seed the substrate's microbial community, which speeds up the establishment period when a new tank is at its most algae-prone. Mineral additives raise the trace element content available at the root zone. Neither is essential, and neither substitutes for a proper cycle — but in the first six weeks of a high-light scape, anything that helps the tank mature faster is buying you a cleaner start.
Do not overdo it
Excess organics buried under substrate produce hydrogen sulfide in anaerobic pockets, which is the black sludge and rotten-egg smell people find when they finally dig up an old tank. Follow the dose on the bag rather than reasoning that more must be better. Deep sand beds in particular want either plant roots running through them or gentle periodic disturbance.
What goes with what
Base layers belong with active aquasoil, not with inert gravel — the whole assembly is designed as a system. Root tabs work with anything. Bring a photo of the problem
Nutrient deficiency is much easier to diagnose from a picture of the affected leaf than from a description. Bring one in to either store along with a water sample — testing is free — and we will tell you whether the answer is in the substrate or in the water column.
