The Congo Tetra, scientifically known as Phenacogrammus interruptus,
belongs to the Alestidae family. Originating from the Congo River basin
in Africa, these stunning fish are admired for their vibrant colors and
distinctive finnage. As shoaling fish, they thrive in groups, displaying
enhanced colors and social behaviors in a well-maintained aquarium. The
Congo Tetra's genome aligns with that of other tetras, and their
evolutionary line involves adaptations to the diverse riverine
environments of their native habitat.
Summary of Aquatic Life:
Congo Tetras are characterized by their iridescent blue bodies, vibrant
orange anal fins, and long, flowing tail fins. They prefer densely
planted aquariums mimicking their natural environment. As omnivores,
they benefit from a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes,
pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, and occasional
vegetable matter. Keeping them in groups of at least six enhances their
natural schooling behavior and intensifies their coloration.
Creating a Happy and Healthy Environment:
1. Tank Size: Provide a tank of at least 30 gallons to accommodate their schooling nature.
2. Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 75-82°F (24-28°C) and a pH level between 6.0-7.5.
3. Filtration: Efficient filtration to ensure clean and well-oxygenated water.
4. Substrate and Decor: Use soft substrate with dense planting, driftwood, and rocks for hiding places.
5. Lighting: Use subdued lighting to create a comfortable environment.
6. Feeding: Offer a varied diet, including high-quality flakes,
pellets, live or frozen foods, and occasional vegetable matter.
