Monoculus Peacock Bass

Peacock bass are some of the most beautiful and ferocious predatory fish available in the hobby today. Though technically they are not bass but in fact Cichlids they resemble the tall body and big mouth of a bass fish. Labeled peacocks as all species of peacock bass have a peacock “eye” on the tail. These fantastic new world Cichlids originate from South America and have found their way to North America due to human introduction. In Florida they have been introduced to assist with other invasive species as they will readily predate on them. Also known as a prized anglers catch for their explosive bites. There are currently 16 varieties described and hear a pet zone we regularly carry them.

Currently we have the Monoculus Peacock Bass available for order nation wide. Mono Bass are identified by the three large black stripes that spans from the top of their spine to about halfway down their bodies. Also known for their beautiful bright green/yellow coloration with red fins that brighten in spawning mode. They originate from blackwater rivers and lakes of the Amazon. Blackwater is described by water filled with tannins from driftwood and leaf litter that falls to the ground. The water parameters in the Amazon are acidic and tannins from fallen leaves create a tea in the water which softens the water to help keep the fish healthy. Generally they are not too fussy when kept in aquariums however they will appreciate a driftwood log for tannins and hiding.

Peacock bass are massive predatory fish and will readily eat any fish or invert that will fit in their mouths (they have big mouths!). Caution should be taken with tank mates, they typically do better in species only tanks or with large monster fish like Arowana‘s or stingrays. These fish can be up-sized accordingly with grow out tanks. They will need a very large tank of 200+gal eventually as they are heavy bodied and powerful with adult specimens reaching 31” in length and 20 lbs in weight! Species only tanks are impressive with the Peacock Bass hunting like a pack of wolves.
