Hujeta Gar "Rocket Gar" Freshwater Barracuda (Ctenolucius hujeta)

Hujeta Gar “Rocket Gar” (Ctenolucius hujeta) – Sleek, Fast-Paced Predator for Large Community Tanks

Introduce speed and elegance to your freshwater aquarium with the Hujeta Gar, a long, slender surface-dwelling predator often called the “Rocket Gar” or “Freshwater Barracuda.” Known for its lightning-fast strikes and torpedo-like body, this fish is a standout in larger, peaceful predator tanks.

Key Features:

  • Streamlined, silver body with a long snout filled with needle-like teeth

  • Peaceful toward similarly sized or larger tankmates despite its predatory instincts

  • Surface-oriented swimmer – ideal for tanks with open horizontal space and a secure lid

  • Fascinating schooling behavior when kept in groups, especially as juveniles

  • Great fit for South American biotopes or predator-themed aquariums

Care Tips:
Ctenolucius hujeta prefers soft to neutral water with moderate flow and plenty of swimming space. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are agile jumpers. Feed a diet of small live or frozen foods like fish, shrimp, or large bloodworms—though many can be weaned onto frozen over time. Avoid keeping them with very small fish, as they may be seen as prey.

With their sleek appearance, unique behavior, and non-aggressive nature, Hujeta Gars make a fascinating addition to the right aquarium setup.

Other common names for this fish: Rocket Gar, Hujeta Gar, Gar Characin, Slant Nosed Gar, South American Freshwater Needlefish.

Size is currently about 2 inches.

These fish do well in pairs or groups and tend to dwell on the upper levels of the tank.  Be sure to house them with fish no smaller than them as they will inevitably become eaten by the Gar.

A well secured cover or lid is required as they can jump.  They aren't brackish water fish though a tad bit of salt will be good for them.
