Super Red Crystal Shrimp
Scientific Name: Caridina cantonensis
Description:
The Super Red Crystal Shrimp is a stunning freshwater shrimp known for its vibrant red coloration, accented with bright white bands. This eye-catching shrimp is a selectively bred variety of the Crystal Red Shrimp, carefully cultivated for its intense and consistent red hues. Its unique colors and gentle nature make it a favorite among shrimp enthusiasts and an excellent choice for adding beauty and diversity to planted aquariums.
Place of Origin:
Originally, Caridina cantonensis species are native to freshwater streams and rivers in Southern China, particularly around Hong Kong and Guangdong. The Super Red Crystal Shrimp, however, is a product of selective breeding within the aquarium trade, primarily in Asia.
Care in Aquarium:
- Tank Size: Minimum of 5 gallons, ideally in a dedicated shrimp tank.
- Water Temperature: 68-74°F (20-23°C).
- pH Level: 5.5-6.5 for optimal color and health.
- Water Hardness: Soft, around 4-6 dGH.
- Temperament: Peaceful, suitable for community tanks with small, non-aggressive species.
- Diet: Algae wafers, high-quality shrimp pellets, and blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini.
Additional Notes:
Super Red Crystal Shrimp are sensitive to water quality and require stable, clean water parameters. Weekly partial water changes and careful monitoring of water conditions are essential. These shrimp thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spaces and moss for grazing. They do best in a shrimp-only tank or with small, peaceful tankmates that won’t pose a threat to their safety.
