Leucistic Silver Arowana

The Arowana fish is somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, they have been kept in Asia for a source of good luck for many years. Also known as the Dragon Fish they resemble ancient Chinese Dragons with their long bodies and whiskers. A fantastic variety of monster fish, the Arowana can grow upwards of 4 feet and can be upsized in grow-out tanks as they mature. A strong predatory fish that is known to hunt on the top of the water and leap out several feet to attack pray in hanging tree branches. In the aquarium a tight fitted lid is suggested. In the wild larger specimens have been observed leaping out and eating smaller varieties of monkey’s!

Here at Pet Zone SD we are known for supplying Dragon Fish nation wide, they have been a staple fish that we have carried for years. Over the years breeders have created different varieties of Arowana, giving life to some of the most magnificent fish seen to date. Currently we have a leucistic variety available, these leucistic Arowana are of the rarer types. Currently available in the states are Silver Arowana, Black Arowana, Albino Arowana, Leucistic Arowana, Jardini Arowana, leichardti arowana and African Arowana. The Asian Arowana is currently illegal in the US. A platinum type also exists in all the Arowana varieties however they are extremely rare.

The Leucistic Arowana is similar to albinism in that it refers to a lack of melanin in the scales and skin of the fish. The difference between albinism and leucism Is the degree to which it lacks melanin. Albino varieties completely lack melanin, this is reflected mainly in the eyes. Albino fish have a lack of pigment in the retina and iris which allows for the blood vessels to be seen creating a “red eye”. Leucism is genetically different in that it does not take away the pigment of the retina or iris, thus allowing for a full colored eye while maintaining the white colored body due to lack of pigment. As these fish grow the iridescent white color on the skin becomes more vibrant which creates an absolutely stunning fish. These natural genetic alterations are some of the most fantastic varieties available and are not often seen!
