Corydoras are tiny catfish with a unique look and awesome personalities. Ranging in size from 1”-4.6” they have armored bodies that help protect them from predators. Corydoras also have spines that typically are venomous. They are popular in the aquarium hobby for their bottom dwelling schooling ability. A group of Cory Cats is a fantastic addition to any peaceful community tank.
The Orange Venezuelan Cory is a striking fish with a bright orange body and a iridescent green center. They are a natural occurring morph of the Bronze Cory with the major difference being the outline of bright orange on the body. The orange coloration gets larger and brighter as the fish matures making for a stunning Cory Cat. This morph is still quite rare in the hobby and is not often available. Cory cats can be found at the bottom of the tank scavenging through the substrate with their barbells. it’s important that they have a soft substrate such as sand or round gravel as any abrasive rocks may damage their bellies and barbells creating infection. They appreciate sinking dried foods and frozen blood worms as a staple diet. Therapist kept in groups of 5 to 10 in appreciate softer more acidic water. Cory cats do not like water that is too warm and 75 to 78 degrees will work well.
Cory cats are great tank mates for smaller fish and even do well with smaller invertebrates such as dwarf shrimp. They are an excellent addition to a planted tank with dwarf cichlids and are helpful in eating fallen food that is not consumed by the others fish. It’s important to make sure they have a varied diet and not just allow them to rely on falling foods not eaten by tank mates. The Orange Venezuelan Cory teaches a size of about 2.5” and a tank of 20+ gallons is suggested.
