Chili Rasbora

The Chili Rasbora is a tiny and vibrant freshwater fish that has captured the hearts of aquarists around the world. Known for its brilliant red coloration and peaceful schooling behavior, this species is ideal for nano tanks, planted aquariums, and community setups with other small, non aggressive fish. Native to the blackwater streams and peat swamps of Southeast Asia, the Chili Rasbora thrives in calm, well planted environments that mimic its natural habitat.

Chili Rasboras are very small, growing to only about one inch in length, but their intense red color makes them stand out beautifully in a well maintained tank. Males typically display brighter colors, especially during breeding, while females are slightly larger and paler. These fish are active, social, and most comfortable in groups of at least six to ten, which helps bring out their natural schooling behavior and reduces stress.

A clean, planted aquarium is essential for Chili Rasboras. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water with gentle filtration and minimal current. Floating plants, mosses, and dense vegetation provide hiding spots and make them feel secure. A tank size of at least 10 gallons is recommended, though larger groups benefit from more space.

Feeding Chili Rasboras is straightforward, as they accept small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, microworms, baby brine shrimp, and finely crushed flakes or micro pellets. A varied diet helps maintain their vivid red coloration and supports overall health.

These fish are peaceful and do well with other small, gentle species like ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, small rasboras, and small shrimp. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive tankmates that may intimidate or harm them.

Breeding Chili Rasboras is possible in a well prepared tank. They are egg scatterers, and providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops increases the chances of successful hatching. Fry are very small and require infusoria or other microscopic foods initially, gradually progressing to baby brine shrimp and micro pellets.

The Chili Rasbora is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a tiny, peaceful fish with striking coloration. With proper care, a planted tank, and a calm environment, these red gems thrive and bring lively movement and vivid color to any freshwater aquarium.
