The Electric Yellow Lab Cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus), also known as the Yellow Lab or Electric Yellow Mbuna, is one of the most popular and striking African cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, this vibrant fish is prized for its bright lemon-yellow body contrasted by black fins and a peaceful temperament compared to other Mbuna species.

Electric Yellow Labs typically grow to about 4 inches in length and have a sturdy, streamlined body. Males and females look quite similar, though mature males may develop slightly more intense coloration and a pointed dorsal fin. Their electric-yellow hue adds a stunning burst of color to any aquarium.

These cichlids thrive in rocky environments that mimic their natural Lake Malawi habitat. Provide plenty of rock caves, ledges, and hiding spots to help reduce aggression and give each fish its own territory. A sandy or fine gravel substrate works best, and maintaining excellent water quality is essential.

Ideal water conditions include a temperature between 76°F and 82°F, a pH of 7.8 to 8.6, and hard, mineral-rich water. They prefer moderate water flow and benefit from regular water changes.

Electric Yellow Labs are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional vegetable matter like spirulina or blanched spinach. Avoid feeding too much protein, as it can cause digestive issues common in African cichlids.

While they are one of the more peaceful Mbuna species, Electric Yellow Labs can still show territorial behavior, especially during breeding. They do well with other moderately tempered cichlids from Lake Malawi such as Acei, Rusty, or Red Zebra Cichlids. Keep them in groups of one male with several females to minimize aggression.

With proper care, Electric Yellow Labs can live up to 8 years or longer. Their stunning coloration, lively behavior, and compatibility with other Malawi cichlids make them a favorite choice for both beginner and experienced cichlid keepers.
