Green Spotted Pufferfish
The Green Spotted Pufferfish (Tetraodon nigroviridis) is a unique and fascinating freshwater species that is known for its distinctive green body covered with dark spots and bright, curious eyes. Native to brackish waters of Southeast Asia, including rivers, estuaries, and coastal areas, this pufferfish is highly intelligent and full of personality.
Green Spotted Puffers can grow up to 6 inches in length and are best kept in tanks that mimic their natural brackish environment. While they are often sold as freshwater fish, they actually require gradually increasing salinity as they mature. Adults do best in lightly brackish water with a specific gravity around 1.005 to 1.008.
These puffers are semi-aggressive and are best kept either singly or in very carefully selected tank mates. They are known for their curious and interactive behavior, often recognizing their owners and exploring the aquarium actively.
Green Spotted Puffers are carnivorous and require a diet rich in meaty foods. They thrive on snails, shrimp, bloodworms, and other shelled or protein-rich foods. Feeding them hard-shelled foods helps wear down their continuously growing teeth and prevents dental issues.
A tank for a Green Spotted Puffer should include plenty of hiding spots, rocks, driftwood, and caves, as well as a sandy substrate. They are excellent diggers and may rearrange decorations, so sturdy décor is recommended. Strong filtration and regular water changes are critical, as puffers produce a lot of waste.
Green Spotted Puffers are highly intelligent, interactive, and can live up to 10 years or more with proper care. Their unique behavior, striking appearance, and engaging personality make them a favorite for dedicated aquarists willing to meet their specific needs.
