Hi Fin Loach

The Hi Fin Loach is an active and fascinating freshwater fish that is well known for its elongated body, striking fin shapes, and energetic behavior. Native to Southeast Asia, this loach thrives in rivers and streams with moderate currents, sandy or fine gravel substrates, and plenty of hiding spots. They are a popular choice for community aquariums due to their peaceful nature and interesting personality.

Hi Fin Loaches typically grow to around 4 to 6 inches in length, with a slender, cylindrical body that allows them to navigate tight spaces and explore the aquarium. Their high dorsal fin gives them a unique appearance, while their coloration usually consists of brown or golden hues with darker markings, helping them blend into natural substrates.

A spacious aquarium is important for Hi Finches, as they are active swimmers. A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group, with sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect their sensitive barbels. They appreciate a well planted tank with driftwood, rocks, and hiding spots. Moderate water flow and regular filtration help mimic their natural environment and keep them healthy.

Hi Fin Loaches are peaceful and social fish, best kept in groups of three or more. They interact well with other non aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, dwarf corydoras, and small peaceful cichlids. Avoid aggressive or overly large tankmates that may stress or harm them.

Feeding Hi Fin Loaches is straightforward. They are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet that includes high quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Occasional vegetable matter such as blanched zucchini or cucumber can also be offered. Their constant search for food along the substrate is a pleasure to watch.

Breeding Hi Fin Loaches in captivity is rare and challenging, but providing excellent water quality, a spacious tank, and a group with mixed genders can sometimes encourage spawning behavior. Observing their social interactions and foraging habits provides plenty of enjoyment even without breeding.
