The Julii Corydoras is a small, peaceful, and social freshwater catfish that is highly popular among aquarists for its charming behavior and attractive spotted pattern. Native to Brazil, these bottom-dwelling fish are commonly found in slow-moving rivers and streams with soft, sandy substrates.
Julii Corydoras have a silver or light tan body covered with dark spots and a distinctive horizontal stripe running along the sides, giving them a delicate and striking appearance. They typically grow to around 2 to 2.5 inches in length and have armored plates instead of scales, along with small barbels around the mouth used for foraging along the substrate.
These fish are social and should be kept in groups of at least 4 to 6 individuals. In schools, they display natural behaviors such as scavenging the tank bottom together, interacting with each other, and showing playful activity, which makes them a joy to watch.
Julii Corydoras thrive in water temperatures between 72°F and 78°F, with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. A soft sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels, and adding plants, driftwood, and hiding spots helps replicate their natural environment.
They are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods including sinking pellets, algae wafers, flakes, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Feeding a varied diet ensures they stay healthy and maintain their vibrant coloration.
Julii Corydoras are peaceful and compatible with most small, non-aggressive fish such as tetras, rasboras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive species that may stress or harm them.
Hardy and gentle, the Julii Corydoras is an excellent choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. With proper care and clean water, they can live up to 5 years or more, adding beauty and activity to any community aquarium.
