Otocinclus

Otocinclus are small, peaceful freshwater catfish known for their algae eating abilities and calm temperament. They are often called otos or dwarf suckermouth catfish and are a favorite among aquarists looking to control algae naturally in community tanks. These fish are active, social, and spend most of their time grazing on plant leaves, driftwood, and tank surfaces.

Otocinclus thrive in well maintained aquariums with clean, stable water and gentle filtration. They prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and low to moderate water flow. Providing plenty of live plants, mosses, and smooth surfaces allows them to forage comfortably and feel secure. Otocinclus should always be kept in groups of at least four to six, as they are social and display more natural behavior in a school.

Care requirements
Lighting low to moderate to support plant growth and reduce stress
Diet primarily algae, biofilm, and supplemented with blanched vegetables or algae wafers
Water temperature stable between twenty two and twenty six degrees Celsius
Water parameters soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral pH
Tank placement bottom to mid levels while grazing on surfaces

Otocinclus are gentle and peaceful, making them compatible with most small community fish and shrimp. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular water changes and monitoring of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are essential. With proper care, these fish can thrive and live for several years while helping to maintain a clean and balanced aquarium environment.

Otocinclus are an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a small, peaceful, and effective algae eating fish. Their calm behavior, active foraging, and social nature make them a valuable and visually appealing addition to planted tanks and community aquariums.
