Panda Garra (Garra flavatra) is a small, peaceful freshwater fish that has quickly become a favorite among aquarists due to its striking black-and-white “panda” coloration and active, entertaining behavior. Native to fast-flowing streams in Southeast Asia, Panda Garra is well-suited for community tanks, especially those with other small, peaceful fish.
Panda Garra are known for their playful and energetic nature. They are constantly exploring the tank, grazing on algae, and interacting with their surroundings. Their black patches around the eyes and dorsal area give them a panda-like appearance, making them a visually captivating addition to any aquarium.
These fish are hardy and adaptable, thriving in well-oxygenated freshwater with moderate currents. They prefer a temperature range of 72–78°F (22–26°C) and slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH of 6.5–7.5. A tank with smooth rocks, driftwood, and plants will mimic their natural habitat and provide hiding spots and grazing surfaces.
Diet for Panda Garra is omnivorous. They readily accept algae wafers, high-quality flakes or pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. Their constant grazing helps control algae growth in the tank, making them a functional as well as attractive addition.
Panda Garra are social fish that do best in small groups of five or more. Their active schooling behavior creates dynamic movement in the aquarium, and they are peaceful enough to coexist with other small, non-aggressive species.
In summary, Panda Garra is a hardy, visually striking, and engaging fish that adds energy and charm to any community aquarium. With proper care, a suitable tank setup, and a balanced diet, these little pandas can thrive and become a delightful centerpiece in your freshwater setup.
