Pink Convict Cichlid
The Pink Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata var. “Pink”) is a captivating freshwater fish known for its vibrant coloration and spirited personality. A selectively bred variant of the classic convict cichlid, the Pink Convict stands out with its soft pink to salmon body, accented by the characteristic dark vertical stripes that give the species its name. This combination of bold patterning and gentle pink hues makes it a favorite among aquarists looking for a colorful and active cichlid.
Native to Central America, particularly Honduras and Nicaragua, Pink Convict Cichlids thrive in warm, tropical waters. They are medium-sized fish, typically reaching 5–6 inches in length, making them suitable for moderately sized aquariums of at least 30–40 gallons for a single pair. They are hardy and adaptable, tolerating a range of water conditions, but they thrive in clean, well-filtered water with a temperature range of 75–82°F and a pH between 6.5 and 8.0.
Behavior-wise, Pink Convicts are known for their intelligence and strong territorial instincts. While generally peaceful when young, adults can become aggressive, especially during breeding. They are excellent parents, with both males and females fiercely guarding their eggs and fry. Providing hiding spots with rocks, caves, or driftwood can help reduce territorial disputes and give them a sense of security.
Feeding Pink Convict Cichlids is straightforward, as they are omnivorous. They enjoy a varied diet including high-quality pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A balanced diet promotes vibrant coloration and robust health.
Pink Convict Cichlids are relatively easy to breed in captivity. They are substrate spawners, typically laying eggs on flat rocks or inside caves. After spawning, the female tends the eggs while the male protects the territory. The fry hatch within a few days and are free-swimming shortly after, at which point they can be fed finely crushed flake food or newly hatched brine shrimp.
Overall, the Pink Convict Cichlid is a beautiful and engaging addition to any tropical aquarium. Its striking pink coloration, interactive personality, and ease of care make it an ideal choice for both beginner and experienced cichlid enthusiasts. With proper care, this lively and colorful fish will provide years of enjoyment and visual appeal.
