Pygmy Cory Cat
Corydoras pygmaeus
The Pygmy Cory Cat is a tiny, charming schooling catfish that brings nonstop activity and personality to freshwater aquariums. Native to small tributaries and shallow streams in South America, this species is loved for its peaceful nature, miniature size, and adorable group behavior.
Unlike many other corydoras that spend most of their time on the bottom, the Pygmy Cory is much more active throughout the entire tank. They dart around in groups, hover mid water, and explore plants and décor with surprising energy. Keeping them in a group of at least six is essential, but larger groups make them even more confident and fun to watch.
Pygmy Cory Cats thrive in well planted aquariums with soft substrate. Fine sand is ideal, as it allows them to forage safely without damaging their delicate barbels. They appreciate gentle flow, clean water, and plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and leaf litter.
These little catfish are extremely peaceful and make excellent tankmates for other small community fish such as rasboras, tetras, ricefish, and other dwarf species. They also coexist well with shrimp and other gentle bottom dwellers.
Feeding Pygmy Cory Cats is easy. They accept micro pellets, crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, microworms, and other small sinking foods. Since they stay active in the middle of the tank, they often eat alongside schooling fish, so offering sinking foods ensures they get enough.
The Pygmy Cory Cat is a delightful addition to nano and community tanks. Its tiny size, friendly behavior, and constant activity make it one of the most endearing and rewarding small catfish to keep.
