The Rummynose Tetra (*Hemigrammus rhodostomus*) is a striking and peaceful freshwater fish, admired for its unique coloration and schooling behavior. Native to the Amazon Basin in South America, this species inhabits slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, and tributaries where clear, soft, and slightly acidic water is abundant.
Rummynose Tetras are easily recognized by their bright red nose, metallic silver body, and black-and-white striped tail. Their vivid coloration becomes even more intense when kept in healthy schools, making them a stunning addition to community aquariums. They typically grow to about 1.5–2 inches in length, making them suitable for medium-sized tanks.
These tetras are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least 6–8 or more. Schooling not only enhances their visual appeal but also helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviors. They are peaceful fish and do well with other non-aggressive tankmates such as small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf gouramis.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas and subdued lighting is ideal for Rummynose Tetras. Driftwood, fine-leaved plants, and floating vegetation can help replicate their natural habitat, providing both security and aesthetic appeal. They thrive in temperatures between 72–79°F, with a pH of 5.5–7.0 and soft to moderately hard water.
Rummynose Tetras are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Feeding a balanced diet helps maintain their bright colors and overall health.
With proper care, Rummynose Tetras can live up to 5 years. Their vibrant red noses, peaceful nature, and captivating schooling behavior make them a favorite choice for planted and community aquariums, adding both beauty and harmony to any tank setup.
