The Mystery Snail is one of the most popular freshwater snails in the aquarium hobby. It is known for its bright colors peaceful nature and ability to help keep the tank clean. Mystery Snails come in many colors including gold blue ivory purple and brown which makes them a favorite for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
What Is a Mystery Snail
The Mystery Snail is a freshwater species that grows to about one and a half inches. It has a round smooth shell and long antennae that it uses to explore its surroundings. These snails breathe air as well as water using a siphon tube that they extend to the surface. They are gentle and do not harm healthy plants which makes them safe for planted tanks.
Tank Setup
A tank of at least five gallons is recommended for a single Mystery Snail. Larger tanks are better especially when keeping more than one. They prefer temperatures between seventy two and eighty degrees Fahrenheit and a pH that is neutral or slightly alkaline. Their shells need calcium so the water should not be too soft. They enjoy tanks with plants driftwood smooth gravel or sand and plenty of surfaces to graze on.
Diet and Feeding
Mystery Snails eat algae leftover fish food and decaying plant matter. If the tank does not provide enough natural food they can be given algae wafers sinking pellets and blanched vegetables such as zucchini spinach or green beans. They need a balanced diet to maintain a strong healthy shell.
Behavior
Mystery Snails are peaceful active and curious. They move around the tank grazing on surfaces and climbing plants and decorations. They occasionally float to the surface and drift around which is normal behavior. They also lay their eggs above the waterline in a large pink or white cluster.
Tank Mates
Good tank mates include peaceful fish such as tetras guppies mollies rasboras corydoras shrimp and other snails. Avoid aggressive or nippy fish that may damage the snail’s antennae such as some cichlids or bettas.
Common Mistakes
Keeping them in water that is too soft or acidic which can harm their shells.
Not providing enough food.
Housing them with aggressive tank mates.
Allowing them to escape by not securing the tank lid if the water level is high.
