Tiger Barb – Puntigrus tetrazona
The Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a lively and colorful freshwater fish that is a favorite among aquarists for its striking appearance and active behavior. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, this species inhabits slow-moving rivers, streams, and flooded forests, where it thrives in densely planted environments.
Tiger Barbs are easily recognized by their bold black vertical stripes against a bright orange or golden body. Their fins often have a reddish or orange hue, adding to their vibrant appearance. Juveniles tend to have slightly muted colors, but males develop more intense coloration as they mature, especially during breeding periods.
This species is highly social and thrives in schools of at least six or more. Keeping Tiger Barbs in groups helps reduce aggressive behavior and encourages natural schooling activity. While generally peaceful with other active, robust fish, they may occasionally nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned tankmates, so careful selection of companions is recommended.
Tiger Barbs are adaptable and hardy, making them suitable for beginner aquarists. They prefer a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas and a moderate current. Providing hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, or dense plantings helps them feel secure.
Feeding Tiger Barbs is simple, as they are omnivorous. A varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms, will ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration.
During breeding, Tiger Barbs scatter their eggs among plants or over substrates. Males display heightened colors and active behavior while courting females. Providing plenty of plant cover can improve the survival rate of the eggs.
With their energetic personality, striking colors, and engaging behavior, Tiger Barbs make an excellent addition to a community aquarium of similar-sized, active fish. Their schooling tendencies and lively interactions provide constant entertainment for aquarists of all experience levels.
