UFO Loach – Gastromyzon sp.

The UFO Loach (Gastromyzon sp.) is a unique and fascinating freshwater fish known for its unusual body shape and excellent algae-eating abilities. Often called a “butterfly loach” or “hillstream loach,” this species has a flat, disc-like body that allows it to cling to rocks and aquarium surfaces, giving it the appearance of a tiny “UFO.” Originating from fast-flowing streams and rivers in Southeast Asia, the UFO Loach is perfectly adapted to life in high-oxygen, fast-current environments.

This loach’s body is streamlined with wide, wing-like pectoral fins that help it hold onto surfaces in strong currents. It displays a variety of attractive patterns, often with intricate spots or stripes, which can differ between individuals and species. Its peaceful nature and interesting behavior make it a great addition to well-maintained aquariums designed to replicate riverine conditions.

UFO Loaches thrive in aquariums with cool, clean, and well-oxygenated water. A strong current, plenty of smooth rocks, driftwood, and live plants provide the perfect environment for them to graze and explore. They are best kept in groups, as they are naturally social and feel more secure when housed with their own kind.

Feeding UFO Loaches is straightforward. In addition to grazing on naturally growing algae and biofilm, they should be offered sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and high-quality sinking pellets. A varied diet ensures they remain healthy and active.

With their quirky appearance, active grazing behavior, and peaceful temperament, the UFO Loach makes an excellent choice for aquarists who enjoy unique, river-dwelling fish. When given proper care and a well-oxygenated setup, these loaches will thrive and provide endless interest in the aquarium.
