UFO Loach Care Guide
The UFO Loach is a unique freshwater loach known for its flattened body shape and disc like appearance when viewed from above. It is a peaceful bottom dwelling fish that is popular in planted aquariums and community tanks with calm tank mates.
Appearance and Size
UFO Loaches have a very flat rounded body with wide pectoral fins that give them a saucer or UFO like shape. Their coloration is usually brown tan or gray with darker mottled patterns that provide excellent camouflage on rocks and substrate. Adults typically grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches in length.
Natural Habitat and Behavior
This loach originates from fast flowing streams and rivers in Southeast Asia where it lives among smooth rocks and gravel. It uses its flattened body to cling to surfaces and resist strong currents. UFO Loaches are peaceful and social and should be kept in groups of at least three to five. They are most active during the day and spend much of their time grazing on surfaces.
Aquarium Requirements
A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. The aquarium should have excellent oxygenation and moderate to strong water flow to mimic their natural habitat. Water temperature should be maintained between 68 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. pH should range from 6.5 to 7.5 with soft to moderately hard water.
Use smooth sand or fine gravel substrate to protect their undersides. Provide plenty of rounded stones driftwood and hiding spots. While plants can be used they should be hardy species that tolerate flow such as Anubias Java fern and mosses.
Diet and Feeding
UFO Loaches are omnivorous grazers. They feed on biofilm algae and micro organisms in the aquarium. Supplemental feeding should include sinking pellets algae wafers and frozen foods such as bloodworms brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed once daily and ensure food reaches the bottom.
Tank Mates
They are compatible with peaceful fish that enjoy similar cooler fast flowing water conditions. Suitable tank mates include small barbs danios rainbowfish and other peaceful loaches. Avoid aggressive fish and species that prefer warm still water. They are generally safe with shrimp though very small shrimp may be eaten.
Breeding
Breeding UFO Loaches in home aquariums is rare. They are believed to be seasonal spawners that require specific environmental triggers such as temperature changes and increased flow. Most specimens in the trade are wild caught.
General Care and Health
UFO Loaches are sensitive to poor water quality and require stable well oxygenated conditions. Regular water changes and strong filtration are important. They are sensitive to medications containing copper and should be treated carefully if illness occurs.
Summary
The UFO Loach is an interesting and peaceful bottom dweller that adds unique shape and activity to freshwater aquariums. With proper flow oxygenation and clean water it can thrive and become a standout species in community tanks.
