Tomato Vampire Crab (Geosesarma sp.) - Bright Red Land Crab
True to its name, the Tomato Vampire Crab features a striking, vibrant red-orange body that stands out against natural moss and dark soil.
Like other Geosesarma species, these are semi-terrestrial, meaning they require a Paludarium setup with roughly 50% land and 50% water.
They are fascinating to watch as they scavenge on land and dip into the water to molt. Best kept in small colonies with plenty of hiding spots.
? Important Care Guide: Vampire Crabs (Geosesarma sp.)
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: These are NOT fully aquatic crabs. Placing them in a standard fish tank with no land will result in stress and eventual death. They require a specific setup to thrive.
-
The Setup (Paludarium): These crabs are semi-terrestrial. Your tank should be roughly 50% Land and 50% Water (or 60/40). They need dry areas with soil, moss, and wood to burrow and forage, and a water section to submerge in for molting and hydration.
-
Water Depth: The water section does not need to be deep; 2–4 inches is sufficient. Ensure there is an easy way for them to climb out of the water (driftwood, rocks, or a sloped bank).
-
Humidity & Temp: They originate from humid tropical forests.
-
Temperature: 75°F - 82°F.
-
Humidity: High (75%+). Keep the tank covered to retain moisture and mist the moss regularly.
-
-
Diet: They are omnivorous scavengers. Feed them a mix of sinking crab pellets, freeze-dried insects (bloodworms/crickets), and occasional vegetables.
-
Social Behavior: They are social and do best in small colonies (e.g., 3–6 crabs). However, do not mix different colors/species of Vampire Crabs (e.g., do not put Purple and Tomato crabs together), as they can be aggressive toward different species.
